Program Summary:

Students participating in the internship or research abroad program will be hosted by vetted conservation professionals on secure properties throughout Southern Africa. You will gain transferable, practical, real-world skills, increasing your professional marketability throughout your future career. You will gain these skills by working hard and building lasting bonds with our conservation hosts, wildland stewards, faculty associates, researchers, and professionals. If you chose the research route, you will be a part of or create your own research project. All ResearchWild! programs can earn transferable university credit. Please contact one of our affiliate universities or your university’s international department for more information. Not only will you gain life changing skills and experiences which will advance you in your career choice, you can advance in your degree plan as well.

Program Dates:

  • Rolling Admission Available throughout the year

  • Applications received 2-3 months in advance

  • Deposit paid as acceptance of your assignment must be made as soon as possible

  • Final Payment must be received one month before start date

Program Length:

4, 8, and 12-week internship options are available now. Other scheduling options can be arranged.

Example Day:

  • 6:00 AM –Wake Up Eat Breakfast

  • 7:00 AM- Start Work Day

  • 11:00 AM- Lunch, Free Time

  • 1:00 PM-Afternoon Work

  • 5:00 PM-Head Back to Camp

  • 7:00 PM- Dinner

  • After 7:00 PM-Free Time

Risk Management Policy:

  • Completion and sign-off of ResearchWild!’s pre-departure checklist.

  • Students provided with ResearchWild!'s Health and Well-being Form which goes over topics like travel medicine and vaccinations, emergency contact information, our required comprehensive travel insurance provided through Cultural Insurance Services International, and more.

  • We recommend students register with the US Department of State and enroll with local U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (a service of the Bureau of Consular Affairs - U.S. Department of State).

  • Students will be asked to call their bank about their trip

  • Students will be asked to call their phone company about their trip

Pre-Trip Orientation:

  • Cultural Dos and Don'ts will be discussed

  • Sign Waiver of Liability and Code of Conduct form

  • The destination country’s government status will be discussed

  • Every Student will have travelers insurance provided through Cultural Insurance Services International

  • The student’s vaccine needs will be discussed

During Trip:

  • Students will have access to first aid while on grounds of the property

  • Supervised trips into town can be arranged for supplies

  • Evacuation routes are pre-defined

  • Routes to the closest medical center are pre-defined

  • Students will be briefed on the possible dangerous animals inhabiting their space

  • Students will be asked if possible to contact family via phone or Internet

  • Program Managers will give weekly progress reports of the students’ statuses

  • Program Managers will alert family/management immediately if an emergency arises

Post Trip:

  • There will be a Follow Up Program Evaluation to be completed by the student and Student Evaluation to be completed by our hosts and provided to your university faculty, if required.

  • ResearchWild! will make sure that all students have made it safely home


  • Transportation to and from the airport and on excursions will be via insured vehicles driven by licensed ResearchWild! representatives

  • Students can arrange to have access to rental vehicles while abroad, if desired

Program Cost:

  • Program costs vary

  • $500 to $1,000 non-refundable deposit, depending on your program

  • $4,000 to $11,000 program fees (Prices vary based on host, program, and program lengths which vary from 1 to 3 months abroad - Students will be informed of all cost options before itinerary is finalized)

  • Program fees do not include airfare or personal costs (souvenirs, personal supplies, etc.)


  • Airfare prices to Southern Africa varies by location. Google Flights provides a good overview of airline prices. Ask your internship coordinator for more information regarding your required travel destination.
